New special coin issue: Swissmint depicts the beauty of the four seasons in a silver coin series

Bern, 08.06.2026 — Swissmint is launching the four-part series “The Four Seasons” with its new special coin dedicated to summer. Issued on 11 June 2026, the first silver coin highlights the changing of the seasons.

4 Seasons – Summer

Swissmint produces exclusive limited-edition collector coins under the name “Swiss special coins”. The new special coin series artistically showcases Switzerland's seasonal highlights and diversity.

About the “Four Seasons” series

In Switzerland, the four seasons are clearly distinct. They divide the year into four periods, defined by astronomical, calendar-based or characteristic climatic features. These four seasons arise from the tilt of the Earth's axis (approx. 23.5°) and the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. This causes the intensity, duration and angle of incidence of sunlight to change at any given location.

The four special coins in this series are characterised by their very detailed and highly symbolic designs on the obverse. Each coin is dedicated to a season, and shows its defining characteristics. The season and the three months for the period it covers are written in one of the four national languages – German, French, Italian and Rhaeto-Romanic – reflecting the linguistic diversity of Switzerland. In addition, the Earth’s typical position relative to the Sun is shown for each season, as is the direction of the Sun’s rays, thereby providing an additional scientific context.

The design is completed with a characteristic symbol – sun, chestnut, snowflake or flower – and a constellation that can typically be seen in the night sky during the relevant season. Thus the coins vividly combine cultural, linguistic and natural elements.

The reverse of the special coins also depicts the four seasons. This is achieved using a stylised vegetation cycle: in summer, the plants bloom in all their glory; in autumn, it is harvest time and the plants bear ripe fruit; in winter, the plants are barren, only to grow again in spring.

The special coins bring our country's history and diversity to life

The new special coin dedicated to summer is produced in a 999 silver alloy. It has a face value of CHF 20, weighs 20g and has a diameter of 33mm.

The obverse shows the sun's position according to the season. In summer, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted most towards the sun and therefore receives more light and heat. The sun is thus a fitting symbol for this season. A world map centred on Switzerland is delicately outlined within the bright sun's core. The “Summer Triangle” constellation, typical of this season, is depicted at the bottom left. The coin edge features the Italian words “Estate”, “guigno”, “luglio”, and “agosto”.

The reverse shows the vegetation cycle in full bloom. The symbolic depiction of summer is raised and polished. Around the edge of the coin is the face value of CHF 20, the inscription “CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA”, the minting year 2026 and the mint mark B for Swissmint.

The coin will be released in a limited issue comprising 8,000 coins in uncirculated quality with an issue price of CHF 65, and 3,500 coins in proof quality with an issue price of CHF 110. In addition, the proof quality version is tinted with the season's predominant colour: yellow. The coin will be available from 11 June 2026 in Swissmint's official online shop.
