Taxation of married couples and families
Married couples are currently taxed jointly, which can lead to a higher or lower tax burden compared to unmarried couples, depending on how the income is distributed between the spouses.
As English is not one of Switzerland's official languages, only the most important information is translated into English. Please refer to the German, French or Italian original version.
Individual taxation
On 8 March 2026, voters will vote on the Federal Act on Individual Taxation. The Act stipulates that all persons – regardless of their marital status – will be taxed individually.
Joint taxation
On 27 March 2024, the Centre Party submitted a popular initiative entitled “Ja zu fairen Bundessteuern auch für Ehepaare – Diskriminierung der Ehe endlich abschaffen!”. It calls for married couples to be taxed jointly and not disadvantaged compared to other taxpayers.
